Initial designs for a billion-dollar mixed-use project in downtown Charleston are expected to be released next week at the end of a public design charrette. Ohio-based real estate company North American Properties is planning to develop the 160-acre Laurel Island, which sits near Romney Street and Morrison Drive north of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and across from Drum Island along Town Creek. In September, the city and county of Georgetown, South Carolina, sought ULI’s advice on redeveloping 150 acres of industrial waterfront land that includes the recently shuttered ArcelorMittal steel mill and the Port of Georgetown. The second-largest seaport in the state, Georgetown is a city of 9,000 residents, located an hour south of Myrtle Beach and 60 minutes north of Charleston.
