ULI South Carolina is proud to sponsor two note-worthy events as part of Charleston Moves Mobility Month.
Charleston Moves is a nonprofit organization that encourages mobility by bicycle, foot and public transit for the improved health and well-being of greater Charleston — people, neighborhoods, business districts and overall economic competitiveness. Each May, Charleston Moves hosts a series of events to bring the community together around safe, connected and equitable multi-mobility.
The first event will take place Tuesday, May 21, from 6:00-7:30pm at the Mount Pleasant Regional Library. “Equity, Access & Planning: How Transportation Underpins Charleston’s Major Issues” is part two of their transportation lecture series. Local experts will share their perspective on the many ways that equitable multi-modal transportation underpins the major issues facing Charleston. The conversation will dive into the role of equity in transportation, specifically as it relates to affordable housing, job security, gentrification, human-scaled urban planning and greenspace. The panel of local leaders include: Dot Scott of The Charleston Branch NAACP, Melissa Maddox-Evans of the City of Charleston, SC Government‘s Housing Authority, Vince Graham of Loci, and ULI member Erin Stevens of Surculus. To find out more about this event, visit the event listing.
The second event is on Tuesday May 28, from 6:00-7:30pm at Chicora Elementary School. “The Future of Transit is Now” will give participants the opportunity to hear more from the team behind the region’s largest investment in public transportation: the Lowcountry Rapid Transit (LCRT) system planned to connect Summerville and the Charleston peninsula in 2025.
The event will kick off with a brief report on the recent transit and complete streets bills filed by State Representative Marvin Pendarvis – District 113 (D-Charleston) and State Senator Marlon Kimpson (D-Charleston). Then, the BCDCOG and project consultant HDR will provide a project update on the latest planning efforts for the LCRT system, followed by a group breakout activity to give neighbors the opportunity to weigh in on the planned route. This event is sponsored by ULI South Carolina, and is a collaboration between Charleston Moves, Metanoia, LowCountry Alliance for Model Communities, BCDCOG and HDR.
