Initial designs for a billion-dollar mixed-use project in downtown Charleston are expected to be released next week at the end of a public design charrette. Ohio-based real estate company North American Properties is planning to develop the 160-acre Laurel Island, which sits near Romney Street and Morrison Drive north of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and across from Drum Island along Town Creek.
The Lorelei team, including urban designer Andres Duany from Miami-based Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co., will hold a weeklong charrette in Charleston from Sunday through Oct. 21, according to a news release.
Three events will be open to the public:
- Monday, October 17 – The charrette will kick off with a panel discussion to share goals for the week and gather feedback from the community at 6 p.m. at Edmund’s Oast, at 1081 Morrison Drive.
- Wednesday, October 19 – A midterm presentation will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Charleston Gaillard Center, at 95 Calhoun St.
- Friday, October 21 – Initial designs for Lorelei will be presented during an event at 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Gaillard Center.
